Seller's Description

Detailed Condtion : Brand new and unworn!

ANTIQUE VICTORIAN CRANBERRY GLASS JUG

This very pretty little jug is simple in style with a plain glass handle.

It stands approx. 15.5cm tall and its width, including the handle, is approx. 12.5cm.

It has a ground pontil with a little bubble peeping through - this shows it was hand-blown.

Cranberry glass, mostly in a deep pink colour, became extremely popular in Victorian times.  Along with deep rich green, these jewel colours were hand-blown and more affordable than the traditional and expensive cut-glass. The cranberry glass was more expensive than other colours because it was created by adding gold salts or colloidal gold to molten glass.  For this reason it was made in hand-blown craft production, rather than large quantities, due to the high cost of the gold.  It was often used for the bowls of impressive oil lamps, and in the 1950s/60s, these and cranberry glass in general were very popular again and made serious money.
