Seller's Description

CHAU3357 Antique letter dated 14th Feb 1952 from the Dean of Westminster of the 1950s and 1960s Mr Alan Don including for the Queen's Coronation who also has an incredible array of achievements including being on of the Trustees of the National Portrait Gallery which is two pages all written in hand by Alan Don and on the reverse he has signed it too - It is on his official headed paper folded twice where posted, and a small top left corner place to allow otherwise mostly great condition (vg grading). I have made the main gallery image the front of the letter so you can see his headed paper but please also view image 2 to see the rest of his letter and his signature.  A truly historic signing and opportunity for any London historian.

Alan Campbell Don KCVO (3 January 1885 3 May 1966) was a trustee of the National Portrait Gallery, editor of the Scottish Episcopal Church's 1929 Scottish Prayer Book, chaplain and secretary to Cosmo Lang, Archbishop of Canterbury, from 1931 to 1941, Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons from 1936 to 1946 and Dean of Westminster from 1946 to 1959. This was followed in 1946 by elevation to the post of Dean of Westminster, a post he was to hold for 13 years, a period which included the Queen's Coronation. One other event in his time as Dean was the theft of the Stone of Scone just prior to the Coronation. As a Scot, Don felt this theft acutely and was important to the return of the Coronation Stone to Westminster.

This has come from the private collection from the estate of Doctor Elston Grey-Turner CBE MC TD (16 August 1916 20 January 1984) who was a British medical doctor who served in World War II and was on the staff of the British Medical Association for many years. He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and served as regimental medical officer to the 2nd Battalion of the Coldstream Guards 19421945. He was awarded the Territorial Decoration, and also the Military Cross.
