Seller's Description

Original 1781 9 1/8 inch x 12 1/2 inch Etching and Engraving titled THE ABDUCTION OF HELEN

Cupid standing holding his quiver and bow with finger pointing upwards, on a coast with a ship in the background.

Print by Pietro Vitali (1755 - circa 1830). Reproductive engraver from Vicenza.

From the painting by Guido Reni (1575 - 1642). The figure of Cupid is extracted from Reni's painting of the Abduction of Helen, of which the prime version is in the Louvre, Paris.

Published by Giovanni Volpato (1740 - 1803)

Inscription: Lettered below the image: “Guido Reni Pinxt. / P.Vitali Delint. et Sculp. Romae 1781. Apud Joh. Volpato. / Numquam humeris positurus arcum. Horace”

The etching is in very good condition with general age-related toning and minor defects from handling.
