Menolly is a talented musician, but in her
seahold world girls do not become Harpers, and boys become fishermen --
not extraordinary dragonriders! Meeting a real dragon and dragonrider,
Menolly is inspired to create a song. She receives harsh and unfair
punishment and runs away to live homeless. Alone, she encounters
newly-hatched fire lizards who learn to sing with her, and the horrors
of a sizzling threadfall. Saved on dragonback, she witnesses a seahold
boy at a heart-warming dragon hatching, and meets the kindly people at
Benden Weyr - - not the least of whom is master harper Robinton himself.
