School histories hold a somewhat equivocal position in English literature, for they range from what are little more than extended and possibly inaccurate pamphlets to works of scholarship mainly of course on the subject of our great and ancient foundations. Mr. Willson has written a book which is not only unquestionably a work of scholarship, but also one which is a magnifying glass concentrated upon a small piece of English social history from the sixteenth century to the present day.

We live in a time when the continuing usefulness of our ancient grammar schools is being called into question. Perhaps thechief value of this book is that it shows that the tide of contoversies, political, social or religious, has for four hundred years flowed and ebbed about the school. Today it is still there, more flourishing than ever before. For the more violent of our educational reformers this book should be compulsory reading.
