In that year Abbot John Gedy and the Burgesses of Arbroath entered into a covenant for the building of a port.
However, it is likely that the little bay at Auchmithie has been a safe haven for fishermen since long before that.
It was at Auchmithie that the haddock was first smoked over a wood fire as a means of preservation,
but it was when Auchmithie fishermen moved to Arbroath that the Arbroath Smokie became a world-renowned delicacy.
