Stated First Edition, but not a first printing

8vo size hardcover with dust jacket; 372 pages

From jacket:  "In 1865 Boston, the literary geniuses of the Dante Club, poets and Harvard professors Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, and James Russell Lowell, along with publisher J.T. Fields - are finishing America's first translation of The Divine Comedy and preparing to unveil Dante's remarkable visions to the New World.  The powerful Boston Brahmins at Harvard College are fighting to keep Dante in obscurity, believing that the infiltration of foreign superstitions into American minds will prove as corrupting as the immigrants arriving at Boston Harbor."

QUESTIONS?

Please ask any questions prior to your purchase.

We do not accept Offers.  We do not respond to offers made.  The price is what it is.  We’d love it if you would pay more, because we need a bookmobile, but we won’t take less.

IS THERE SOMETHING YOU WANT TO TELL US?

Have we misspelled something?  Please let us know.  Is a photograph missing?  Please let us know.  Do you have information you think we should add to our listing?  Do you want to share some information about a relative who signed a book we have on offer or a recipe we highlighted or a historical note?  We appreciate your interest and we’d love to hear from you.

SHIPPING AND HANDLING:

Every item has calculated shipping. Please choose your preferred method.

Shipping includes USPS tracking where available.

All shipments are subject to US Postal Service regulations.

When we ship the item, you will receive a message with shipping information and USPS Tracking Number (where applicable.)

Please visit www.usps.com to check the tracking of your package for shipments within the United States.  End to end tracking is not available for most shipments outside the United States.

GIFTS:

Please let us know if you’re sending a gift, because we will be including a receipt with the price of the item.  You may not want us to include the receipt.  We’re happy to include our gift card (at no cost) or your note or message (also at no cost.)  We will not send anonymous gifts.

PAYMENT:

Payment must be made in US funds and by PayPal.

CONTACTING YOU AFTER YOUR PURCHASE:

Occasionally, we have questions after your purchase.  Sometimes we need to confirm a shipping address.  If we have questions, we will contact you through ebid’s messaging system. Please check your ebid Messages and your email or shipment of your item may be delayed.  It is possible that your purchase may be cancelled if we don’t hear back from you.

BUYERS LOCATED OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES - PLEASE NOTE:

Receipt of your item may be delayed if it has to go through custom inspection in your country.  Occasionally, this adds days or weeks to delivery.

Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.

Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

Customs fees are normally charged by the shipping company or collected when you pick the item up. These fees are not additional shipping charges.

We won't under-value merchandise or mark the item as a gift on customs forms. Doing that is against U.S. and international laws.

During peak shipping times, it may take weeks to have your item clear customs.  We’ve had some items arrive in Europe in a week, but a package to South America once took six weeks to arrive!  Again, you’ll have to check with the customs office in your country if your item hasn’t been received.

Restrictions in your country may not allow us to ship certain items.

Many countries do not allow shipments of coins or precious metals, for example.  Some media, including computer software, music CDs or DVDs may be restricted for sale outside the United States.

VHS and DVDs are formatted differently for different countries.

If you are purchasing a VHS videotape, please note the format your machine requires before you make your purchase.  Most of our tapes are NTSC format (it is specified in the listing what the format is) which will not work in most video players in Europe and Australia.  We routinely contact anyone overseas who purchases a VHS video to ask them to check if their machine can play an NTSC tape before we ship.

Many DVDs also have a specific format by country.  If you are purchasing a DVD, please make sure the DVD is a format that will play in your machine.

NO RETURN, NO CANCELLATION POLICY:

We no longer accept returns or cancellations due a history of fraudulent claims.

OUR TEXT, IMAGES AND OUR COPYRIGHT:

Our photographs and text, including titles and subtitles, are copyrighted and may not be used, copied or redistributed.  Quotes are for illustrative purposes only and remain the property of their respective copyright holders.

Civil and criminal penalties apply to the theft of copyrighted material.

If you see our photographs or text elsewhere on eBid or online, please let us know.

We’ve found our “stolen” photographs and text on other e-commerce websites many times.  In order to help reduce fraud and image theft, you’ll notice that most of our photographs have our logo or other label appearing on each image which obscures a small part of the item.

It is possible that anyone who uses stolen images or text may not even have the item they are trying to sell and that their intention is to defraud you.  We don’t want anyone to use our images or text to try and sell you something they don’t have.

Please be savvy and safe while shopping online.  Your local public library should be able to help you find great resources to protect yourself and your family while shopping online.

Thank you for reading this.  You are the kind of educated consumer with whom we want to do business and whom we aim very hard to please.

We appreciate your looking at our listing! Your purchase supports libraries, literacy and lifelong learning.

Synopsis
1. Discuss how the various characters benefit intellectually and professionally from their association with the Dante Club reading and translation group. How is the group similar to book clubs now popular throughout the United States? How does it differ? 2. (Follow-up) Whats the secret of the power of collective reading? Compare the dynamic of the Dante Club to your own book club or reading group. 3. The death of Fanny Longfellow leads Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to take refuge in his translation of Dante. Discuss why Dante in particular seems to help him through his dark period. How is his sanctuary affected by the outbreak of violence from that same work of literature? 4. (Follow-up) Are there ways in which literature has provided a refuge in your own lives at difficult or confusing times? 5. In Dantes Divine Comedy, Dantes poetic idol Virgil leads him through the dangerous passages of the afterlife. In what ways do the characters of THE DANTE CLUB guide one other? Who would you say is the real leader? 6. How does the backdrop of the American Civil War influence the events of the novel? 7. Did you guess who the murderer was before it was revealed? 8. (Follow-up) Come on, did you really? 9. (Follow-up 2) What are the ways in which the author misdirected the reader from the murderer? Or, if you had correct suspicions, what tipped you off? In what ways were the murderers motives surprising? What do they reveal about the exploration of different types of reading that runs throughout the novel? 10. Discuss some of the instances in modern culture in which an artistic work music, film or literature seemed to have some impact on inspiring a crime. Some examples: Mark David Chapman carrying The Catcher in the Rye when he shot John Lennon; the Columbine killers supposedly drawing inspiration from Marilyn Manson songs and the video game Doom several instances of people imitating Natural Born Killers in robberies and shootings. In that last instance, John Grisham led a campaign to prove Oliver Stone held responsibility after a friend of Grishams was killed. Is the work of art ever to blame? Do the murders in THE DANTE CLUB stem from the brutality of INFERNO? 11. (Follow-up) Should the Dante Club members have revealed the source of violence to the public? What was at stake besides their reputations? 12. Discuss Patrolman Nicholas Reys role in the challenges facing the Dante Club, with consideration for Reys status as a type of exile in Boston, and how this fits into the larger story. 13. Discuss the character of Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes. Why does he emerge as the character in the novel with the heaviest burden? What elements of his personal background make the events of the story so disruptive and frightening to Holmes? 14. (Follow-up) Discuss Dr. Holmess relationship with his son, Wendell Junior. How does it compare or differ from James Russell Lowells relationship with his daughter, Mabel Lowell? 15. Take a look at the pictures of the characters in the gallery of THE DANTE CLUB website (www.thedanteclub.com). Do their appearances differ from how you
