The way Brunschwig connects the socio-economic and intellectual-literary history of Prussia strikes me as a model of historiographical wisdom; the analysis he gives of the German Romantics has enough resonances with recent patterns of youthful revolutionary modes to make the book remarkably topical.Henri Brunschwigs major historical work was originally published in Paris in 1947 and has been recognized as a classic in its field. The first English translation, completed in 1974, includes a preface by the author and an addition to the appendix on the emancipation of the Jews in Prussian society.The Prussia of Frederick II, based largely on political and social concepts of the Aufklarung- the Enlightenment- was a model state. Yet during the last years of the eighteenth century its structure disintegrated, to the surpirse of its supporters and the continuing interest of historians. The purpose of Brunschwigs study is to describe the system of the Aufklarung in Prussia, to break it down into its component parts the crisis which came to undermine it, and to account for the change in mentality when Prussian citizens moved away from an attitude of rationalism to one of intense Romanticism.Brunschwig combs a wide range of primary sources dealing with such varied phenomena as vagrancy and brigandage, career opportunities for young theological candidates, concepts of the miraculous, etc. He constructs an unfailingly interesting picture of the era, one that should be helpful to all students of German letters and history.
