PORTLAND BILL LIGHTHOUSE Panoramapuzzle Jigsaw
4 miles long and 1.5 miles wide, the Isle of Portland juts straight into the English Channel from the Jurassic Coast of Dorset. A powerful tidal race and dangerous underwater ledge just offshore from Portland Bill makes the vicinity particularly hazardous ti shipping. With another storm looking, the ever-present threat of mother nature's forces is perfectly captured in this picture of Portland Bill Lighthoue at sunset.
Founded in 1716, the present lighthouse dates from 1906. Standing 41 metres tall, the powerful light flashes 4 times every 20 seconds and is visible for 25 nautical miles. Now unmanned, the lighthouse is controlled from an operation centre in Harwich.
