DELTA QUEEN Jigsaw Puzzle.

This picture shows a 19th century paddle-steamer, the Delta queen, sailing down the Mississippi by moonlight, a romantic scene straight from the stories of Mark Twain. The steamers were fuelled by wood, and carried cargo and passengers down the great river to New Orleans, Paddle-steamer racing was a srious business, and the skippers were quite reckless in their desire to win, straining their boilers almost to the point of explosion and burning mixtures of pine resin and turpentine guaranteed to lift their great vessels nearly out of the water. A good race could bring financial rewards, particularly from betting. In the 1830s coal was introduced, adding to the safety of those on board but removing some of the excitement.
