Pieter Breugal, member of the great Breugal family of artists, produced many copies of his father's works. "THE PAYMENT OF TAXES AT BETHLEHEM" varies from that painted by his father in that the subject is shown as a contemporary event symbolised by the ruins of the castle in the background, which was inspired by the towers and gates of Amsterdam, drawn by Breugal the Great in 1562.

The arrival of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem appears in Flemish art before Breugal, but the scene of the taxation is very unusual prior to the Breugals' paintings.

This work is a typical example of Breugal's composition, with the carefulluy observed motifs in the picture giving it an almost poetic quality.
