Interesting counter token struck in 1677 by Dutch Republic to celebrate the peace negotiations preparing the treaties of Nijmegen with two scales on Obverse in attractive condition.
Obv.: QUIESCAM ET QUIESCERE FACIAM. Dove with olive branch in its beak flying over the water.
Rev.: RESPONDENT INTIMA QVANTO. A balance with coins in one tray and one weight in the other, left a test weight cabinet and right a smelting oven for testing metals. At the bottom 8 bricks.
The dove and olive branch for the peace treaty, and the scales for weighing out or balancing the concessions made by all the parties to the treaties. In times of the issue of the token it was not known yet that there will be row of peace treaties between France, Dutch Republic, Spain, Holy Roman Empire and Sweden. It became the apotheosis of the rule of the Sun King Louis XIV.
This issue represents rare in coinage plot with coins themselves and the routine of money changers. Those days all images were highly allegoric, some are easy to interpret: dove with olive branch is for peace, some are not so easy and some are lost. Should inland waters represent the Waal river and indicate Nijmegen itself? Why the weight cabinet is on the other side of the scales from tray with weight? It is not practical to make the measurements in such a way. Why the wind on Reverse blows to the left? It is not practical to work with scales smelling the smoke.
