Seller's Description

1954 Herm Island Fauna Stamp Butterflies

Mint, no hinge marks

The Herm Island sub-post office was closed in 1938 when the Germans occupied the Channel Islands.  After the war, A.G.Jefferies issued a series of carriage stamps for payment to carry letters from the island to Guernsey between 1949 and 1969, when a post office was again opened on the island.  All mail had to also carry British stamps. These stamps were legal, but did not bear the word "Postage".

This was part of the "Flora and Fauna" set issued in 1954

Denomination is 2½ Pence

Scott's and Stanley Gibbons do not list local stamps
