Rare and very collectable Antique WILLIAM IV Sterling Solid Silver Soup, Stew or Serving Ladle, made in DUMFRIES, SCOTLAND in 1837,then sent to EDINBURGH to be assayed and pay the silver duty, making this a 185 Year old Antique Treasure.
Fully hallmarked for ADAM BURGESS, Adam Burgess, known working dates 1834 to 1849. Adam Burgess started trading as a silversmith in Castle Douglas in August 1834, sending his work 90 miles or so to Edinburgh for assay. His last batch of table and desert spoons from Castle Douglas was dispatched in November 1835. His next consignment was sent from Dumfries in October 1836.
The Ladle is Huge 34cm/13.25 inches Long, and weighs a very hefty 221gms, it is of the FIDDLE or OAR PATTERN, it is monogrammed with the single letter W or CA or TA in script, please look at the pictures to decipher for yourself. Although the ladle is big it has a very elegant feel to it.
The Hallmarks are very readable, the ladle is made of a very good gauge of silver.
The condition is very good Antique condition for a spoon that is 185 years old it has very little wear to the bowl, a nice polished finish, no repairs or damage, surface scratches commensurate with age, it has been used, a very collectable item of SCOTTISH PROVINCIAL silver that would grace any collection..
