I don't think you can see the detail or the amount of work that went into this. You'd have to ask your Grandmother or Great-Grandmother to find out, because this HAS to be a lost art!
I have also examined this piece very closely (which will drive you blind!) and I'm having a hard time seeing any damage or separations. It was probably hand-washed all these years - a habit I'd recommend if you acquire this item.
The color is more like an ivory than white and lays out to cover a space approximately 16 x 14 inchs.
