Iris Agate Trillion Cabochon: Rainbow Iris Phenomenon; 8.15 cts; Indonesia

This pretty gem displays the rare iris optical effect. When the banding in some agates are just the right distance apart, they form a grating which only allows certain color wavelengths within the light to pass through at various angles. The result is little rainbows that play along the agate bands. The iris effect will vary depending on the angle, color and intensity of the backlight source. The honey carnelian and cream colors of the bands in this piece would look great set in silver or gold. The back is polished, and only an open-backed setting should be used for this gem in order to allow the iris effect to be displayed against a light source. This will be an unusual and interesting addition to your jewel design or collection.
