I was but a teenager during the last recession, the thing I remember most about it was the recycled toilet paper
I'm sure there was no need for it really, it's only a few pennies more for the nice stuff. My advice would be to shop smart - you can still have nice stuff if you shop around and make savings elsewhere.

The world seems a very different place from the one during the last recession. It may seem odd to say it but my advice would be

Use the toiletry items you get as presents unless you really hate the smell - I am just amazed how many gift boxes there are in my local charity shops.
It you don't have such gift boxes, consider buying your soap and shower gel in this form from your local charity shops!

Stop using shopping as a main leisure activity.

Sandwiches and a drink combined with a walk in the park ARE a treat to small children. It's called a picnic and it can cost nothing at all if you are near enough to a nice place for that walk.

not a saving as such but..... Maple and I have oil fired central heating (no gas in our village) now that we have two computers running most of the day for our work we now use half the oil we use to due to the heat they throw out... so we work and save at the same time

Be pro-active. If in financial difficulties, don't hope it will all go away: seek advice, cut down on non-essentials, sell things - anything which keeps you feeling that you can take charge of the situation. Do not try and spend your way out using a credit card (or cards).
