If Harmonica players don't blow - they suck.
That is seriously scary.
What if they decided that they'd like to cut their child's earlobes off completely? Much tidier.
Or remove their little toes, or give them a full body tattoo, or any tattoo if it comes to that, or how about other piercings, nice nose stud or eyebrow rings? That's fine is it?
Don't you think that the children (who will be adults one day) should get any choice at all in all this permanent body modification? You think parents should be able to carve their children up at will, to their own personal specifications? Is it really a nanny state that prevents child abuse, or just a state that recognises that its more vulnerable members sometimes need protection against their own parents.
I feel like an amateur chorus on the side here, but now I'm remembering that when I was maybe 3 or 4, my mother decided my fine straight hair needed a permanent. She and one of her friends administered it and I remember being in pain from hair brushings quite a while after that since my hair was all kinky. Fortunately this grew out, unlike other adornments as discussed here.

Parents are Parents.
If a parent would like their child to have earings, then that should be the PARENTS CHOICE. End of (with the exceptions of those that have been classed as unfit by the law / courts)
What right do we have to say that they should not or should allow a childs ears to be pierced, Get real. They are the parents. Would you tell a parent how to bring a child up? If someone told me how to bring a child up I would quickly tell them where to go.
You seem to be making a massive statement about my general feelings, hence what I have highlighted in pink from your post, I am just stating what I think about EAR PIERCING, nothing more nothing less.
You also mention child abuse, if having a childs ears pierced was child abuse then 80% of parents would be locked up. If you are saying that it's not child abuse then why the hell did you mention it?
I would also like to know why children should need to be "protected" from their parents for having their ears pierced. If the parents were breaking the law (which they are not when having ears pierced) then I see where you are coming from, but as it is completely LAWFUL then the parents should be able to make a FREE CHOICE without a nanny state dictating otherwise.
Also just another point, do what you want with this, My eldest daughter went to a party yesturday, there were 11 at the party and 7 had their ears pierced. And YES my daughter was one of the 4 that didn't.

Too hot to handle. As a parent I would not pierce a child's ears. It's not because I consider that child abuse, or against the law, because actually it is not against the law. It's just that I like to see children stay children for as long as possible. They will have to grow up soon enough; they don't need our "help" getting them there sooner than they need to be there.
I also don't like seeing children dressed suggestively, have their nails painted, wear lipstick or makeup, etc. It's not because it's child abuse or against the law, because it's not. I know that little girls absolutely adore doing things like that. I do remember that when my daughter was little I didn't participate in any of those activities with her but she seemed to gravitate there herself. I think I'm just somewhat old fashioned, maybe even a prude.
I tend to leave people alone and let them decide for themselves unless it is actually a child abuse or neglect situation. I usually expect the same from others, just leave me to my old fashioned ways, I'm quite comfortable there.
I won't go into the main bulk of your post, as I would just like to highlight that what you have wrote in the last paragraph is the only point I was trying to get across. (without the abuse / neglet bit) as no person / government / social worker / etc should tell a competant parent / guardian what they can / cannot do as long as it is within the law.

I would have to agree with your position Raindropsies. I'm a strong advocate for a parent that has demonstrated themselves to be responsible, to be the controlling source in their child's upbringing. I am also aware that in some instances it is needful for outside entities to move on behalf of children to protect them because they can not always protect themselves.
