By opposing capital punishment, that by inference implies a right to life - however ill-deserved. Also any convict who does not have the right to change can never be integrated properly into society and will always remain a burden, this right is inherant in the efforts of prison officers, educators, the probation service and others to rehabilitate offenders.
Violent young offenders faced with indefinite sentancing (Her Majesty's Pleasure) will have a very rude awkening and no amount of bragging will help when their "friends" desert them in droves for fear of a similar fate. But for such a strategy to work, it must be very well documented and publicised. Furthermore, great effort must be expended on identifying at an early age, those most likely to behave violently and pressing the message home along with promoting and encouraging alternatives to violence - civilisation don't come cheap.
As for punishment, this ia a concept that is lost on many inmates, the "bagde" of credibility. Prison serves no purpose as punishment nor should it. We imprison people to protect society and should not pander to the idea that criminals are in some way martyrs or heroes. The message is simple - they are removed from society and will remain so until they grow up and learn how to behave in a civilised fashion. It makes my skin crawl when an immature, obnoxious, selfish tike is labled a "dangerous" and/or "professional criminal". Let the courts describe them accurately.
I'll bet the Krays would have loved being told their evil crimes were the actions of pathetic, ignorant mummy's boys, lacking the brain-power and sense of responsibility to make a positive contribution to society.
The reason these sad people get the credibility is because Politicians, the Courts, the Police and half of Joe-public give it to them.
but what about the innocent life of the victim
do they not deserve there killers to be punished?
i have said before
if the young offenders knew it would not be a easy ride and nothing to brag about half of them would think twice
but sadly i cannot see anything changing in the near future
