Thread: Which Broadband provider has the easiest set up?

  1. #1

Cool Which Broadband provider has the easiest set up?

I am fed up of my so slow dial up now, but have been having difficulties in the past with receiving b/band due to the "exchange" to my house.
This now is not a problem, so have been doing price comparisons etc, but have been horrified to discover that practically every provider has some really negative reviews for cust. service.
I am more bothered at this stage in the connection being simple with no problems, ( as i'm a bit of a techono phobe) so my question is what are your experiences with set up and which isp are you with?

    Hi Dawn,

Well I'm with aol and everybody hates them LOL!

personall I'm happy as larry with them and have just secured an 8 meg unlimited platinum package for only £17.99 month, and I have a strange exchange otherwise I'd have been given it for £9.99.

Like I say I've always been happy with aol even though lots aren't.

    Good luck with your searching.

hmm, interesting. The reason I was asking more about set up rather than reliability is because my sister has had real trouble getting the wireless b/band set up & it cost her a small fortune on the helpline to get things put right. Is it normally, plug in and go? Does the old dial up automtically disappear from my computer?

My own change over from dial up to wireless was so straight forward I was knocked for six as my friend another ebidder had to leave aol and mover over to another provider in order to go wireless.

I really do not know why this happens though sorry

Regarding plug in and go - a friend did it for me and it wasn't that quick but he said it was so easy using the router we got that he has changed his own router over to the one we have now.

btw you can get your router free from aol now though, and help to set it all up too. There is free live help online 24/7 too.

easiest has to be sky.. they send you a router and you connect..
you dont have to do anything else.. But its not the most reliable one.. But cant complain at 10 quid a month..

I've got cable so I'm with blueyonder/virgin they did the original setup in 2003. The engineer was ages faffing about (I think I was still running W98 back then) I've changed PC's & operating systems since, & redone it myself no problem.

My sister has been with PlusNet since 2003 with a usb modem,
    simple to do.
Put in the modem CD & run it, plug in the usb when it tells you,
wait for the modem to boot, add the user info you've been given
& you should be connected. I re did hers last week (I'd wiped her PC & reinstalled XP for her) The longest part was the modem booting up.
Took 15 mins max, just make sure you have your splitters in the right place.
    These should help

I left NTL now Virgin, Wish I hadnt left now. They have good packages you get internet mobile, tv & house phone for reasonable prices see their package deals.

I changed from them to BT and was advised that I could have my sky tv added to my home number, internet etc etc. But when they sent me the items, I had to install everything myself the instructions were awkward and then when I called up BT to have everything added with the Sky tv I recently had installed they told me that I was not in the area to have all the packages on one bill for £26 pm. They wanted an extra £40 just so this could be done. So I queried this with them & advised them they mis represented the selling to me. Im awaiting now for a reply, not only that I was without a house phone for 8 weeks as their was a technical or phone issue with my local exchange and the house phone & net werent working, I was advised that I would be refunded £1 per day for inconvienience I never got this, my mobile phone bill is normally £35 pm, but that month it went right up to £65 and still no responce from BT.

If they tell you about the speeds they can offer you, ask them to check your line as some exchanges cannot take all the so call mb's that theyre selling you, I was sold a high package for the net & found out my line can only take about 6 - 7 mb. So they misrepresented that too. They cannot promise you that you will get a higher speed rate as it is up to your local exchange not up to whoever you decide to go with, its one of their selling rip off I want more money tactics, they can measure your line whilst you chat to them on the phone.

    Good luck in your hunting.
