I don't think Herons know the difference between garden ponds and wild ponds/lakes. To them it's just a place to eat and garden ponds are probably just an easier meal, simple as that.

h1r3z the wretched herons fly over a fairly substantial lake, and across a field to get to my pond. My pond is about 12'X 8', so I would have thought they would prefer the lake, bearing in mind I have a Jack Russell dog, and 2 cats patrolling the garden. My neighbours pond is only 6' X 3', but they target it frequently. If they get caught in the netting he shoots them. They are quite vicious if you do try to free them.

I sympathize with you, I've had problems with Herons too, but I think it's purely because they generally get an easier meal from your pond. Chances are they can actually see the fish in your pond from the air or without too much of a wait as opposed to fishing in a larger lake. They'll always remember where the fishing is easy & plentiful too.

The dog I would think would put them off, but I doubt the Heron is bothered about your cats.

I forgot to say, apparently Herons are very territorial and some people claim that having a fake Heron sat by your pond will deter other Herons, but I'm a little doubtful and have never tried it myself.

Fake herons just attracted the real ones in. It was like a retaurant sign to the real ones saying fresh fish on the menu.

Best thing is - take that yoyo away from the dragon, and set it loose in the garden - herons definitely DON'T like dragons. But don't let St. George find it, or there'll be trouble

for a pond your size you would need approx 4 fake herons around they will not stand within 7-10 ft of each other so placed strategically around they will not land near the others it does work since i put 2 around ours they no longer land here they go to next door but ones pond pmsl

I had two plastic herons on the old smaller pond, and it didn't work Dave.
The last heron that came to the new pond had a nasty shock. My rooster took exception and came over the fence after him. It did get away in the end, but minus quite a few feathers. That rooster is huge. I wouldn't like to upset him.
