They tasted horrid because
1. They were Rainbow Trout
2. They are Farmed or Fishery Pond Stock
3. They are fed with pellets full of lovely chemicals
For fresh fish you want, rod caught Brown Trout from a river, cooked and eaten the same day. Same goes for Salmon.
Unfortunately the fish you buy from most shops is farmed = reared in tanks, fed with chemical laden pellets to boost growth with added extras to improve the colour of the flesh so it looks good to the consumer. Supply & Demand I guess.
Please don't let this experience put you off, if you can get a fresh Brownie you will find it very tasty. Place a few slices of lemon and some chopped spring onions in the body cavity, wrap 6-8 sheets of newspaper, soak the paper thoroughly, place on a baking sheet and cook Gas 4 (sorry not sure what electric setting is) for 45 mins - 1 hour, check occasionally and re-soak paper if it has dried out completely. When you take paper off it will remove the outer skin too making it much easier to remove flesh from back bone, make a white/mustard sauce and pour over - delishCook fresh Salmon the same way, adjust cooking time depending on size, it's very tasty.
Yes I fish a lot, it's part of my job hence my passion for fresh fish, won't touch the farmed or fish pond stuff with a 50foot barge pole.
Blessed Be
