I think a blanket ruling with no room for judges to consider individual circumstances would not be a good thing.

Convicted drink drivers should be banned and give custodial sentences relating to their crime. My sister lost her fiance when a drunk driver overtook on a country road and hit him head on ( my sisters bf was on a motorbike). In my view the killer should have been given a sentence for manslaugher, i believe he got off with a fine and a short ban

Other countries do have a zero tolerance towards drink driving, and it is high time this country had the same Law.
If a driver under the influence of alcohol kills someone, they should be charged with manslaughter. A car is, after all, a missile on wheels. Most of them just get charged with drinking and driving. There ought to be a different charge of causing death by drinking and driving, with a minimum 5 year sentence. It won't bring their victims back, but a stint in jail might keep them off the streets. Recently a man was charged at a local court for drinking and driving, no tax, insurance, or MOT, and driving while disqualified. This is his 4th offence in 5 years... at least he has only been caught 4 times. He pays his fine, and gets another old wreck, and he's driving again within the week. The Police say they have to catch him behind the wheel. No matter how many times neighbours phone reporting where he is, the police don't go after him.

I agree and I'm sorry to hear about your sister's loss

The sentences given to drink drivers are unbelievable.

If people want to have a drink then don't drive. It is *that* simple.

Anyone who gets caught driving under the influence before they've killed someone should get a minimum 1 year jail sentence and a 5 year driving ban.

Anyone who drives under the influence and kills someone should get a minimum 10 year jail sentence and a lifetime driving ban.

Everything you say i agree with
Life is serious but taking it too seriously robs you of

    Exclamation drink drivers

I think that anyone who drinks and drives must be a criminal and therefore banned from driving and, if a life is lost, a 'long' custodial sentance given as it would if they used a knife or gun etc.

Zero tollerence should be the rule in this Country and a life ban, in some cases, would be a good idea.

Many drink drivers re-affend -anyone under the influence of anything should be banned and SEVERE, penalties inflicted.

What did it say in the Bible - an eye for an eye or something -----
    No chance here

I have to admit I didn't read this story(I only get the local paper)so I don't know the circumstances of your post. However I was under the assumption that anyone over the limit was automatically banned.By the wording in your post, was he not then over the drink drive limit?

There's no doubt about it. Anyone caught drink driving should be banned automatically. If there has been a fatal accident caused by drink driving, it is MURDER. No other way to put it.

Default yes drink drivvers should be banned!

Ban them immediately and hang em out to dry. I think a 3 year ban first time, and permanant if caught again! Lets face it, if a drunk driver has an accident it is usually the innocent ones that get hurt.
And if they cause a fatal accident, it should be classed as murder 100% and they should be punished in the same way. This is somthing I feel strongly about. 3 close friends of mine were killed in a car accident 5 yrs ago by a drunk driver. This man had been punished for it twice in the past. He was a middle aged alcoholic. The police did not do a test at the crime scene, but the doctors found evidence at the hospital that he was way over the limit. However, as it was done by the doctors, instead of the police at the crime scene, nothing could be done! Instead he got an 18 month ban from driving for careless driving. 3 friends of mine were killed and one seriously injured by this man. He was on the wrong side of the road, speeding and over the limit. It was an absolute disgrace. This man only suffered a broken ankle and shock. He is now driving again, and still an alcoholic lunitic.
    It's a disgrace.
Sorry to ramble on, but this really gets to me!
