I was under the impression that you could pay with a credit or debit card through paypal without needing a paypal account. Unless the buyer has a dislike of paypay even as a gateway.

I don't think the root of the problems is so much that buyers have a dislike of PP, rather that PP has (possibly) taken a dislike to some of its account holders.

PP has been loosing its income / profits from obay for several years now and will be looking for ways to plug that gap. We've all seen some of the changes already made. First keeping the fixed fee when refunding, then later, keeping the variable part also.

When companies start looking for cost savings, who are first in the firing-line? Always the smaller, more expensive to manage and lower profitability customers. Are there cost savings to be made by making PP a mobile only platform? I don't know, but I think it strange that seemingly PP is the only company in the UK that "cannot" get any method of completing SCA / PSD2 other than mobile text to work reliably.

I also find it suspect that PP has been refusing account holders access to their accounts for well over a year because their system doesn't work properly. Particularly as SCA / PSD2 doesn't become compulsory until September this year. To me it looks like a way off weeding-out some of its unwanted, low value customers.

I've made a couple of guesses based on what little information I could find about the recent PP update that talked so vaguely about all private accounts used mainly to acquire the proceeds of sales, having to upgrade to business accounts. Possibly something to do with the UK Tax System, possibly something to do with thresholds imposed by Card Companies. But equally possibly, another way of thinning-out unwanted accounts.

I agree with someone who said earlier that PP is "Cheap and flexible", I'd add that it's widely accepted, almost universally trusted and I'd like to continue to have complete confidence in it as my main portal for payments (and purchases) here and other sites. But the fact is PP is undermining my confidence and until I can see where PP is heading would like to have some alternative available in case PP decides it not longer wants my business.

So just to double check, PP is the only real payment option now? If so then they need to badly fix the FAQ

I am using my Card 90% of the time now mostly due to *bays MP system and I'm sure a good % of people will also be doing the same which for myself is pretty worrying as a seller here. I hope they get some other forms of payment soon since it is probably losing people many sales

That's correct. I buy through Paypal using my debit card and link that card to stores where I used to pay with Paypal.

I can't receive paypal payments as I can't log in to transfer payments into my bank account.

I looked into that a while back and the machines were way too expensive given the frequency that I would want to use one. Most platforms I use as a seller have their own integrated payment system, including 'the river' and 'the big craft site' and soon it will include That Other Site

Moonie I know this may be a stupid question but have you tried contacting them by phone, I had a problem last week getting into my account and phoned them explained the situation and they helped although I did have to ask her to speak more slowly so that I could understand her although it is a lot easier when you get someone in Ireland who answers the phone which happened this afternoon.

Can someone explain how bank transfer would work as I can do telephone banking.

I have a mobile phone but it is only one I use for emergencies when away from the home if I remember to take it with me (PAYG £9.99 Tesco) I only switch it on at home when accessing my PayPal account then it is switched off again but you can have a landline telephone number on your account and they will send an SMS text if your landline accepts them, I switched mine of though because I could never understand what the Robotic voice was saying.

Another bit of "evidence" that makes me suspect PP is lying about not having workable alternatives to mobile / text verification. You're not the first person to find that having handed PP a mobile number, one of the alternatives WILL work for you.

You can (as I did) add your land-line number (international style) instead of a mobile.

For you the robotic voice was couldn't be understood, so you "chose" to use your mobile.
For those who give PP a mobile number then try using the landline alternative find that it works (for now at least).
For myself (and many others)who haven't given a mobile number, the code is shown shown on the screen but the phone never rings, so log-in fails.

It's all just a set-up to get mobile numbers and do it the way PP wants. If that is what the new relationship with PP is going to be like, we urgently need some alternatives.

Although I'm uneasy about handing my bank details out to buyers, at the moment, it's the only alternative I can think of. I enquired at Santander. Apparently it will work for telephone banking or by visiting a branch. I have to provide the (exact) account name, number and sort-code to the buyer.

It's not convenient, I have my doubts about how safe doing that is, but without offering that option if paypal locks me out of my account my only alternative is send a cheque in the post.

I have no idea how they could help me on the phone as I don't have any of the security details to hand and I have ongoing memory issues so don't know where I would find them. I gave up using my phone for outgoing calls some years ago as I have health issues and am on call 24/7 as a carer. Long story.

I used the option for them to call me but I tried several times and the landline didn't ring and I have no idea who to pick up text message on it

Can I suggest that you keep trying? Like everything else to do with PP it seems hit and miss. I've been reading their boards for a while now. Some people find it impossible to get through or get a call back (like I did). Others post replies saying that they've had several conversations with support.

Try different numbers and different times of the day??

Edit to add: I've made a load of notes about this. Here are a couple of PP numbers I've found (other that the one on PP platform I think) that might be worth a try if different to the one(s) you've tried.
