I suppose in today's world of hyphenated names and wives keeping their last upon marriage it seems a bit old fashioned for a woman to take her husbands name upon being married. Actually, I think the practice stems from the idea of ownership. Something that is not looked upon as it once was. Of course, the institution of marriage is, if I'm not mistaken, rooted in the desire to keep property in the family. Something of a business arrangement, I believe.
