I swear a lot--does that count as darning?

Good thing, I'd say - nothing looks worse than a pair of darned socks showing above shoes![]()
That reminds me of my Dad. I suppose he must darn his socks, as I've seen his darned socks showing above his shoes. He's 86, so he's probably of the last generation of darners! My Mum would never do such a thing, though. She would think it would make a person look like a pauper.

I darn knitwear
I darn (woollen) socks, and I'm a bit younger than your Dad, so he's not the last of the line.
I was taught how to do it by my grandmother.
I think its an Army thing - soldiers used to get issued with a thing called a "housewife", which was a sewibg and darning kit in a small pouch. I've got one, though I was never in the mob. I got mine from an army surplus shop.
Who cares what you look like to less knowledgeable people. Haven't they ever heard of re-cycling, or "make-do-and-mend"?
And when you've got a nice pair of woolly socks broken in, so they take the shape of your feet, and stand up on their own, you want them to last as long as possible.
If you like woollen socks, but don't like darning, consider HJ Indestructable Socks.
They really are. 20+ years wear is nothing to a pair of HJs.

I will check out HJ socks for my ex-husband - he likes woollen socks but is forever getting holes in them. I've heard my Dad mention the 'housewife' sewing kit from when he was in the army. And my Mum is just one of those people who cares rather too much about what other people think.
