Thread: Price Comparisons

  1. #1

    Default Price Comparisons

I think we need to keep focus on the price discrepancies here. There is such a huge difference that it does/will affect eBid's reputation.

I have made a commitment to check here first for Christmas shopping stuff. Now my first two checks yielded huge differences in price.

Camera Battery eBid over £17, eBay less than £5
Book eBid over £120, Amazon just over £20.

These are huge differences. Hopefully people will read this and check their pricing. Saying that.....I better go and check mine!

I suppose that high speculative listings are more likely on Ebid because there is no "punishment" in fees for non-sales.

I can't think of an incentive straight away to encourage lower prices, apart from sales.

Sales should be incentive enough. Several times I have shown examples on the forums to highlight the fact that compared to eBay and Amazon you can charge 5% less on eBid and still increase your margins.

This point has been raised many times - my attempt to raise awareness through a price comparison saw the thread being pulled.

Good point. I don't mind a few pennies difference here and there, (or even paying higher shipping if I can't find what I want nearby, as I'm fully aware that shipping isn't free), but large price differences are a major turn off for this buyer.

Best wishes for many sales to all,

The books are typical of the various sites. I have a book to list - it is available on Amazon for £100+ but two copies have sold recently on eBay for around a fiver. I never list a book at a high price until I've checked at least 3 selling sites to check whether the high price is realistic.

I have bought a few books for a fiver there and sold them on Amazon for a very tidy profit!

Ignorance is bliss and leads some venders to grossly undervalue their items!

I know I go on about it too, some ebid sellers live in cloud cuckoo land.
I looked for a few things this week and it was the same old story, much cheaper on you know where?
    Beggars belief??

I think it needs to be understood that the internet age can mean a race to the bottom in terms of pricing. Some of the apparently low prices on eBay are because eBay has business sellers who are selling at a loss or making hardly any profit at all. Sometimes this is a form of feedback manipulation – giving such bargains that customers will give good enough feedback to counteract any unwarranted negative feedback received. Consequently it is unrealistic to expect all prices on eBid to be at eBay levels.

At the other end of the spectrum, there are sellers on eBid who are listing with a pre-internet age bricks and mortar shop approach to pricing who will never sell because their prices are so much higher than the rest of the internet competition.

Even on eBay, there are sellers with a range of prices for the same items so eBid is not alone with not matching lowest prices all the time.

I do not think it helps eBid at all for there to be continual postings in the Forum about pricing – it creates the wrong impression about eBid.

It does not need to be a race to the bottom. Sellers should list at a price that will give them a profit that they are happy with. If there are sellers happy to sell at a loss then good for them, but they will not be around forever. List at a sensible price for both you as a seller and the buyer and you will get the sales and make a profit and the buyer will be happy to pay a good but fair price.
