Could start a new thread on same subject but just happened to google this and it led me here so
heads up on it.
I am going to get those large letter measurers they have at the post office, dont know where to get them from, in order to test for myself whether my parcels fit or not as I'm sure I'm getting ripped off regularly by my local post office. I've noticed it before too.
Definitely was today but as I had quite a few items to post paid all at once I didn't realise I had been till sorting my receipts at home. I believe I was overcharged for an item that should have gone as a large letter according to my reckonings with the tape measure, it was well inside the box! So I'm sending stuff out at a total loss sometimes, if I'm not vigilant.
Anyone else have these problems since the price changes here again in 2012 with RM?
It's the borderline one's that get me. apparently the package should fit 'easily' through their size gauge. The genuine Post Office gauges are a stupid price, I have tried to get a cheaper one but it was just after the price change and I could not get a good one at a good price. If you find one let me know.

Best prices on designer and branded goods in all five stores.
I ordered a bunch of the cardboard ones a while back for free from the Royal Mail site.
£8.48 is cheapest plastic ones I could find for a large flat one (like post offices use)
Or £4.42 for one that has 2 gaps for letter and large letter + all other measurements, but this one is like a large ruler, still does the job and is also made of perspex

I use the free one and usually have no problems.
If it is borderline, I take it to the Post Office and I can usually see if it will fit through the slot, or not. My PO staff are quite good and will give it a bit of a shove. The other fairly local one is a bit of a 'Jobsworth' - she makes sure it drops through.
I got a 'Card' gauge from PO for free. I check border line packets to see if they fit 'reasonably'.
I have found that sometimes they assume a packet is too large without checking. Now that does get my goat.
As I leave parcels and pay later (lucky me) you can end up paying more than you would like.
I always write the expected price and service I would like. That way if they don't agree they can check!
This is the problem with RM getting rid of up to 100g and up to 250g for such small items especially for small packets, they have now made sending such small items unnecessarily expensive. RM's poor management has led to a major increase in cost for us to ship loose action figures and other small action figure related items.
To the matter at hand, of course RM are ripping people off and the postal watchdog has given them full permission to do it as well to add to the insult! RM's idea of what constitutes a large letter is ridiculously small as they want to force people into paying packet prices. When it comes to their dimensions, I am sorry, but, I do not see anyone with a damn letter box THAT small! Even with us, I'm sorry, but 99.99% of loose action figures, in a jiffy mailer, will fit through 100% of letter boxes as a large letter, but because of their silly 5mm depth we have to charge small packet prices which is minimum £2.20 for second class plus cost of packaging materials, or we have ot charge £2.70 for 1st class plus the cost of packaging materials.
RM need to pull their heads out of the clouds and the postal watchdog needs to get a grip on reality and force RM into reintroducing the up to 250g even if they do not reintroduce up to 100g, and both these parties need to get a grip on the reality of letterbox sizes and change the dimensions for a large letter so the depth is up to a couple 2cm as this will easily fit through 100% of letterboxes.
“Doing business without proper advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you are doing but nobody else does and the girl doesn't even know you're winking at her either."
with the borderline ones I prefer to err on the safe side and pay the "large" rate - otherwise the poor recipient may end up stuck with the extra, plus the £1 "fine". Because sadly the posties are a law unto themselves.
