I think over here some people have got so used to using the NHS for free that they forget how to DIY the health related stuff.

I gave up going to my doctor for just about everything after regularly getting dodgy advice from them.

I only see my doctor now if they call me in (about twice a year) and rarely take their advice...just make the right noises and and and smile a bit so they think I'm taking notice of the. Then I go home and get on with it.

For a burn like that...I would just keep it clean and do what cornishmaid said...lightly cover it to protect it from getting snagged on clothes and so on.

I agree that if you are young fit and healthy then minor things usually take care of themselves but not knowing if Pink suffers from anything else and because the scold covers quite a wide area my own advice would still be the same to get it checked out if it had just happened.

I don't think I would class flu in with minor ailments though, that can be particularly dangerous in the younger and older age groups. More people died of flu in 1918-19 than in the first world war itself !

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic

The global mortality rate from the 1918/1919 pandemic is not known, but an estimated 10% to 20% of those who were infected died. With about a third of the world population infected, this case-fatality ratio means 3% to 6% of the entire global population died.[30] Influenza may have killed as many as 25 million people in its first 25 weeks. Older estimates say it killed 40–50 million people,[4] while current estimates say 50—100 million people worldwide were killed.[31] This pandemic has been described as "the greatest medical holocaust in history" and may have killed more people than the Black Death.[32] It is said that this flu killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century

Same sort of thing recenlty happened to me,I boiled a pot of water, large pot for pasta, kids changed their mind and wanted burgers instead as I was dumping the boiling water out in the sink one hand slipped from one of the handles leaving my left hand exposed and the boiling water just ran across it for a good 10 sec

I have my hold hand pretty much scalded with big blisters and skin coming off,doc said it was a deep 2nd degree perscribed some pain meds and an ointment but I will tell you every half hour or so it still feels like that damn boiling water is running over my hand again

I keep some sterile compresses on it and wrap it in a self adhesive sterile gauze 3 time daily and apply the ointment 2 times daily, happened over a week ago still hurts like hell and like my friend who had the same misfortune (the op)everytime I put on clothes, shirts sweaters try to clean the wounds the pain is ten fold and I think,as did he I cam up with a few new cuss words when this happened and everytime I touch it since

Key is to keep it from getting infected,if it blisters do not bust them that will scar, the blisters will ooze, trust me here and hurt like a son of a but all part of the skin regenerating

Hopefully you heal up well with no complications, infections etc now for me everytime I get near heat or cold on the hand it is excruciating so good luck to us both I guess

Again, good luck to you and if you need anyone to yap with about this pm me or whatever we can go over our battle wounds and compare notes

There is an email circulating (again) that say to beat up egg whites and apply to a burn every few minutes and it will quit hurting immediately and will heal fast and leave no scars.

This is just a comment, not a reccomendation. It sounds too simple but often that is what works best.

I'm glad you went to professionals, Pink. I believe the human body evolved to heal itself amazingly well, but that was a pretty big area of damage. I hope your pain is lessened and that your only problem now is keeping the bandage dry. It will be difficult to wash yourself unless you put a big kitchen glove over the hand.

Use a big ziplock bag tape it with that hospital tape if you can get some at your pharmacy, tape it on a lower point of the arm,I am taping mine well below the wrist, keeps the hand nice n dry problem is now trying to learn to wash with 1 hand and not learning my lesson of smacking myself in the face with a wet ziplock bag

Least it keeps the wound dry hope you heal up well

I'm also glad that you got help Pink it's worth the wait if it saves more pain from infection.

It seems to be a week for accidents my brother phoned yesterday to say he's been to the hospital as he sliced his finger with a chain saw, dispite wearing the proper protective gloves, while felling trees. Luckily he has missed the tendons but can't do anything for about four weeks until it heals. His great loves are drumming and kayaking so he's now going to be a miserable git !
