Sorry things are so gray, and blue, and stuffy and flimsy for people............I hope it soon becomes more colorful, unplugged and sturdy for you all!!

Cornish - I may have missed it, but what did the old soldier do in the war(s), or is his an academic interest only??
    Ta-Ta for now!

Did some more shopping and then did some ironingat my mother's. OH has has put the covers on and they are lovely and soft. I have a new set of saucepans - 5 for €65, less than the normal cost, Managed to get a small quantity of Pfefferminzkissen. Sadly the usual supplier is away till tomorrow, so I am not sure if an order will get here by Saturday. There are a couple of things I need to order tonight and then all we have to buy is petrol and bread - both last minute purchases. Have a pleasant evening

The old soldier did his army training in Scotland with the Seaforth Highlanders in January 1942. (He learnt a lot of Scottish slang ! ) After that he was sent to train with the RAOC at Corsham near Bath and was actually in the area when the Bath Blitz happened so quite amusing that he should end up living here !

Later his RAOC company became a founder member of REME and were attached to the US Army.(He learnt a lot of American slang ! ).

In 1943 he volunteered to go overseas starting off in Algiers then gradually moving through (on the same route as Spike Milligan!) to Italy where the Luftwaffe proceeded to bomb them in Naples in March 1944. He ended up with the 8th Army Interpreters Pool in Austria and was running a POW camp that held SS officers.

My late father-in-law was at Arnhem, luckily he wasn't in the first lot of boats to cross (remember the film " A Bridge Too Far" ? ), but even so he got into one boat and was ordered out and told to get into another as it was too full, the original boat was hit and nobody survived so he had a lucky escape.
