Default eBid title search needs drastic improvement!

After a comment I saw in the forums I decided to search for a sellers items just to see if RUS made a big difference. I took a quick glance at the sellers auctions and picked Aynesely China and plugged it into the search bar. o items came up. Went back and checked the spelling and noticed it should have been Aynesley China. I plugged that in and the sellers 3 items came up.

I then tried searching for an incorrect spelling of Gibson guitars but spelled it Gibsen, nothing came up but several pages came up when I spelled it correctly.

Now I could be wrong but not everybody buying on line is a rocket scientist and most of the population are not tremendous spellers (me included). Had someone told me to check out Aynesley China and I would have typed in an incorrect spelling and received no listings OR SUGGESTIONS I would have assumed there were none for sale here on eBid.

I wanted to verify how the other sites treat mispellings and was able to find out neither spelling the seller has here is correct however suggestions were made as to what I might be looking for.

This may sound petty to some but I feel it's a big deal, especially to visitors new to the site and who may be used to typing in what they believe to be the proper spellings of items.

    Can we work on this?

I was actually kidding and really dont know how the searches work or what it takes to get this accomplished. Any search engine I have used always recognized I couldnt spell. To me it just seems to be the way it should be. I am chimping at the bit (so to say/as it were) to get my items listed here again but I keep finding reasons to tell myself: not yet.

I still don't see why they can't employ a Soundex routine rather than a load of look-up tables for misspelled words. A Soundex routine is simplicity to code. Maybe the way the index is built does not allow for it.

    Yes indeed, what Mel said!

Again, I really dont know how difficult or simple a task this is but it's important we give visitors every opportunity to find our stuff.

Yes, misspellings and typos are dead common, IMHO we could all benefit from allowing for them in the search tools.

Best wishes for many sales to all,
