I am not a fisherman, don't know anything about the law, but as I was reading this I keep wondering why the nets aren't the size to let fish that are too small escape.
That's not the problem (mesh sizes are regulated) The problem is that fish are not reaching sexual maturity and therfore are not breeding enough to keep up with overfishing. Thowing back dead fish only compounds this problem. Your local chippie will still be selling at the same level. All those discarded fish would theoretically allow the chippie to sell twice as much if we retained them.
Thanks for the explanation, I won't keep wondering why there isn't a simpler answer.
Thanks for starting this thread Graham.
Europe has all these rules and regs re fishing quotas - then you hear about these bliddy great big factory ships coming along and scooping literally EVERYTHING off the bottom of the sea. Do they throw anything back - except for seaweed or other guff? You can bet your life they don't! It always seems to be the UK fishermen who suffer MOST.
I've been banging on about this throwing back dead fish for yonks! Absolutely NO point whatsoever. These fishermen are out there in all weathers for days/weeks on end to TRY to make a living. My husband and father-in-law were trawl fisherman out of Aberdeen many years ago. There was a lot less regulations in those days but they STILL had to put in a helluva lot of hours to earn a decent wage. I'm off to sign the petition!

Fishing hours are already limited. A lot of skippers are being forced to sea in adverse weather conditions risking the vessel and the lives of all on board. What happens is that they are allowed so many days at sea a month.
If it's a stormy month then there is little or no opportunity to put to sea unless your willing to take massive risks.
The discard system only adds to this mockery.
Well there's been some interesting view points and opinions on this. Thanks
My original post was about the ludicrous amount of waste involvedand without wanting to get embroiled in the politics of the subject, I am still firmly in the camp of believing that there is NO WAY this ridiculous wastage of such a precious resource can be justified. Not for ANY reason!!!
The campaign support count is going well by the way, and is currently up to ...........
344,113 and rising
