It's called 'conservation'.
Making them throw them back stops them fishing for the immature fish or threatened species in the first place - at least that is the theory.
Attachment 20745 You can't conserve dead fish?
New Zealand I believe has no take zones that are relocated every five years.
It's a method that really works to conserve fish stocks!![]()
The scandal is not the waste, but that fish are being caught which should not be caught.
It is cheaper for fishermen to catch all than to catch selectively, but in the end they suffer because they are depleting the stock which will give them their future livelihood.

That's why New Zealand have taken a different tack.
In 50 mile long no take zones All marine life is undisturbed for five years. Imagine that around GB every other 50 miles of coastline a no take zone for 5 years!
Fishermen fishing in the take zones could land all they catch. Fish in no take zones have a good chance to grow to maturity. The no take zones will also maintain a healthy stock in the take zones as fish move out to less crowded waters.
