I don't see that the 800 x 800 causes any problems (and maybe even up to 900 x 900 would be OK) maybe eBid could consider upping the size now that they are no longer hosting user images on their servers.
The ability to smash eBid's page layout, as in the second example, shouldn't be allowed though. For that reason I will not say here how I did it, then I can't get the blame if people start abusing it and wrecking the look and feel of eBid. If they work it out themselves - then good for them.
Ah... when I looked at the first example I thought it had a gallery thumbnail, as most of his stuff does. Only just realised that one doesn't. Doh! I think gallery's too important to lose for the extra size.
I didn't try Gallery format as I always do test listings as Free format (just in case).
I can't see that it would work with Gallery as that will always use the first image defined. Will have a further play later to see if I can figure that out.
Its possible

I suppose I could get 4 photos in before the description

Nope, that's still a Free listing and not Gallery. Getting the large image is easy, getting it as a Gallery listing isn't.
Have just found the poser is linked to this thread: http://www.ebid.net/forums/showthrea...-listing-pages
Now a gallery auction with gallery picture showing but cannot use the big photo as gallery pic as eBid downsizes it
