    Things have changed so fast.

Not so long ago, anyone who was bright felt they had a right to a free university education.

I am not surprised that students feel it not fair to have this generous support withdrawn.

Now students may begin to choose universities according to the likelihood of paying off £18000 tp £27000 fast.

The students who want three years of university education but have no ambition to earn money afterwards will be the ones who like the new system least, but perversely, will end up paying least.

Half of them have no intension of getting a job after, don't they just go on to other meaningless courses way into adult hood?
I think they should raise the leval of the entrance results as well.

Listening to some being interviewed on the TV I found it hard to believe they were university students - they sounded very poorly educated.

All but one I saw were unable to grasp that they would have to be earning over £21,000 per year before they had to pay anything back, and they would be paying back less than they do now. Below 21,000 they pay nothing and the interest on their loan would be subsidised. After 30 years the debt is written off. The majority of students (comprising those complaining the most) would end up paying less than they do now.

If the above is an example of the bulk of university students then we are better off without them.

It seems that many see university as simply a means of putting off having to work for a living for a few more years and have no inclination or intention of putting the resources that have been expended on them to any use.

Education is, and always should be, a right of all. Define 'right to education' though. To me it means education to a level as defined by government - i.e, state education to the point you leave state schools. It does not mean any course that may take your fancy beyond that should be funded from the public purse.

My niece wanted to train to be a professional dancer and qualified to teach. There were no loans, support or help with fees for that. She (or rather her parents) had to find every penny themselves.

Just found this small site which seems to be devoid of the ignorance and hysteria being displayed elsewhere: http://factsonfees.com/index.php

Two of my sons have recently qualified from university with honours degrees, one now doing his masters. Both may I add are in employment and that was always their aim! They have both worked any hour they could to help finance their studies etc. I don't think its right to blanket students here. I and my sons included are disgusted at the violence today but do believe the violence is often perpetrated by factions whose sole aim was that all along, which sadly takes away the voice of those who wanted their voice to be heard in peaceful demonstration!

I also add it is possible to be heard and overturn government decisions. I personally have been involved in a dignified campaign that successfully did just that.

Do we really need all these dustmen and taxi drivers with degrees?

What's the point if there are not enough jobs to go around.

    Raise standards not fees!

I agree wholeheartedly with this, any of those tonight who damaged property etc should be shown the full force of the law, but it doesn't mean I agree with the governments decision or sympathise with those who went there to protest peacefully and then found they couldn't leave when police enforced the containment order.

I feel I should add my other two sons who aren't degree holders are police officers!
