I read somewhere in the forums that the higher the number of listings a seller has, the better the Google exposure and/or sales he/she gets . Is that something proven? I know if you search for stores, ebid shows the stores with most listings first but is that true for Google too? I mean I thing Google looks at a variety of criteria to place a merchant above the other but is the number of items one of them?

No, there is no evidence for this claim. However, there is a certain home-spun logic about it: think "needle in haystack". *grin* It is inevitable that the more stuff you have, the easier you are to find... but the odds for each individual item remain unaltered.

I think the meaning of more listings is that Google might pick up more and so then they might be more visiable. Also if someone looks at one of your items they might click on Sellers other listings and this might lead to sales.

You will notice I used the word "might" several times as I'm not sure this is a proven fact.

I have 398 listings at the moment but still have only the occasional sale. I keep trying to think of ways to promote my listings but am getting a little discouraged so am not planning to list any more until things pick up. My time can be better spent doing something that will pay off.

The way I look at it is that the more listings I have, the more likely it is that someone will stumble over one and buy something.

Exactly. If you snuck into your local supermarket and hid one item on a shelf near the back, most people would miss it. If you spread your stuff all through the shop that one item wouldn't be any more visible, but your stock as a whole would stand a better chance of being spotted. Of course, the supermarket would probably have you arrested, but I didn't say the comparison was perfect. *grin*

And of course the simple fact that you cannot sell what you don't let people know is for sale.

So how would you get more exposure like this when you have a lot of items but many of them are identical?? It's not liked on ebid to create more than one listing for the same item.

The only thing I see that would garner you more exposure od search engines is using more keywords in your descriptions

Multiple identical listings would not give you any additional exposure on search engines - and could actually cause them to place your results lower

I'm not saying multiple identical listings will give additional exposure. I'm saying when you have 1 listing that has multiple items (Dutch listing) then it's not like having more than 1 listing in terms of exposure. If you have 50 different items, you'll create 50 listings but if you have 50 identical items, you'll have 1 listing. So is it actually a disadvantage?

My experience is that the more listings I have the more sales I get. But you need a good mix of items in a particular subject area. I am currently running around 3,500 listings and sell around 30-80 items a week.
