I think this breakdown is ideal (but sub. "canvas" instead of "fabric" under Plastic Canvas)
Long-stitch is often stitched with wool AND floss, to give a more textured look, but the suggestion for a general OTHER category to include long-stitch, stumpwork, etc is good. I don't think any of these are as popular so probably wouldn't need a separate subcategory each.
I'm still undecided whether Completed should go here or under Handmade Goods - I suppose it depends on the quantity to be listed?

Good point. Right now I put older (1940s to 1970s) needlepoint in Antiques/textiles and buyers find it. If I have an older unworked kit, I put in crafts and they find it there too. Search pulls it up
Probably it comes down to guessing where people will look and if that place is good for windowshopping for other similiar items (i.e. have all finished in one place)?
I could still go either way. Can anyone think of an example of a cat that sells supplies and finished products too, so we could check out and see if it works ok. Maybe fly tying or ???

Just checked for a similar cat to see how they handle selling supplies and selling finished products. Sports, fishing, fly fishing, as sub sub cats for supplies and for selling the completed flies. Their titles are not quite like we are looking at "finished" "completed" but everything is in one place.
Granted, nothing else is related, you could not put a completed sports section in sports and expect anyone to list handmade fishing flies there, so it shows we could still go either way, separate craft cat or underneath the specific category.

I've being giving this more thought and think the completed pieces should go under Handmade Goods but this category would need a few subcategories added so that everything doesn't end up in a jumble there.
I'm happy with the last suggestion for Needlework and subcats (other than Completed), so I suggest the following for Handmade Goods:
SUGGESTION 1
Cards>Decoupage*
Cards>Needlework
Cards>Other
Handpainted
Needlework
Jewellery
Other
SUGGESTION 2
Cards>Needlework
Cards>Decoupage*
Cards>Other
Handpainted
Needlework>Cross-stitch
Needlework>Tapestry/Needlepoint
Needlework>Embroidery
Needlework>Other
Knitted/Crochet
Lace
Jewellery
Clay/Salt-dough
Other
* Decoupage or Layered, to include Pyramage, Waterfall, and other 3D effects
I do think Cards needs to be broken down as there are over 1300 listings.
I think it makes sense to have all the handmade goods under one category as you may have decided you would like to buy something handmade as a unique gift, but don't know exactly what to go for, so this gives the option of browsing that category.
Excellent, I like suggestion #2 as it expands on the categories. It is a major change for the craft category, which would mean everyone selling something here would have to change their categories, but at some point it has to be done. No one can find the completed now as they are tucked away in supplies etc. Will be more work to get all items in proper categories but it will mean more sales. With holidays approaching, Mother's day, Easter, etc, it is time that the completed items have their place in the sun.
I did find a similiar type of category, fly tying and the completed is right within the cat of supplies BUT that is not as expensive as knitted gifts, card, etc. It makes sense to have a craft category that includes all of the completed, new, for sale items. As you say, great for window shopping. Most buyers want a special gift, don't want to open eight sub cats to find completed, and would find everything in one place. Perfect.

I think fly-tying isn't ideal as a comparison as the completed fly could still be classed as fishing supplies, but completed craft items could not be classed as craft supplies.
Can't think of anything else that would be sold as supplies and as completed item. How are art supplies listed? Under crafts? Must go and look!
Yep, art supplies are listed under Crafts and finished artwork under Art (self-representing artists)
All the more reason to have finished craftwork in a separate category, and Handmade Goods seems to make the most sense, with the additional subcategories that people need.

We are really coming together on this. As said, its a major overhaul but really needs doing. I hadn't realised just how much of a muddle the cats were in until I started looking at this. Looking just at the Needlepoint cat, there are books, floss, crossstitch kits...all sorts in there...
to continue....let me know if this is right...
This is the list of cats as we would give them to Admin...the needlework cat is a new cat under crafts and sewing. The other cats are a change to the existing Handmade goods already a cat under crafts and sewing,
Its important to let admin know exactly where we want everything to go.
