If its not in a cat of its own it sits in my opinion more in the cross stitch section as its neither tapestry or needlepoint.
You have a point, as plastic canvas can be 14hpi and stitched like cross-stitch, or 10hpi/7hpi and stitched like tapestry. Then again, tapestry canvases can be stitched with floss and cross-stitch instead of wool and tapestry stitch. Where to draw the line?

But I think we're all agreed that these should all come under a Needlework heading (or similar), rather than divided across the general Crafts & Sewing? At the moment, everything seems to be going into the Needlepoint category.

Here is what we have suggested today (thank you for thinking of aida):

Under the new subcategory NEEDLEWORK would be the following sub sub categories:

    Cross stitch
    Embroidery
    Needlepoint/Tapestry

    Cross stitch:
Fabric (even weave, aida, ADD PLASTIC)
Completed pieces (MOVE TO SUB CAT FINISHED NEEDLEWORK (NEW))
    Kits to stitch
    Other
    Patterns (not books)
    stamped cross stitch

    Embroidery:
    Fabric (even weave, linen)
Completed pieces (MOVE TO SUB CAT COMPLETED NEEDLEWORK (NEW)?)
    Kits to stitch
    Other
    Patterns (not books)
    stamped embroidery

    Tapestry/Needlepoint:
Canvas (REMOVE plastic PUT IN CROSS STITCH)
Completed pieces (MOVE TO SUB CAT COMPLETED NEEDLEWORK (NEW))
    Kits to stitch
    Other
    Patterns (not books)
    Wool/floss (REMOVE TO SUPPLIES???)

    Supplies
    Hoops/Frames
    Needles
    Floss
    Tapestry wool (MOVED FROM ABOVE)
    Other

So the subcategory under Crafts would be changed from Completed to Completed Needlework. Sub cats to include:

    Cross stitch
    (FURTHER BREAKDOWN)
    Embroidery
    (FURTHER BREAKDOWN)
    Needlepoint/tapestry
    (FURTHER BREAKDOWN)

I could go either way on moving all completed. But if I was shopping for something, it is a good place to find all the finished needlework AND since it is a sub cat under Crafts, there can be further breakdowns that you can not do if completed is just under Embroidery etc. i.e. So under cross stitch there is room for cards, linens, whatever, which would really help the shoppers find what they want fast, yet windowshop without a lot of effort too.

Now that we are starting to look more closely it is apparent why so many items are in the "wrong" categories. Remember we looked at that a while back and it seemed very widespread. Apparently this was part of the reason why. Two needlepoint sub cats? Throw in the books and what a mess. I think these changes will give the craft area good bones, and further changes would be much easier. Follows logic.

If later crochet, knitting, beading, lace, wants to go into Completed, then the needlework part would be dropped and those added.

    Looking good.

Makes sense. I assumed it to be needlepoint, but the stitch is the thing that decides it.

Bothers me a little to call it a canvas, what if we put it as a separate item, PLASTIC CANVAS instead? So it is not hidden if someone looks in needlepoint, does not see it, can easily see it in the cross stitch and won't have to go thru all the even weave cloth?

I agree...if you just put it in the fabric subcat then you are not taking into account the kits and charts specifically for Plastic Canvaswork..
anyone going into the Cross stitch category would assume that the kits and patterns are for cross stitch.

I would feel happier if Plastic Canvas was in a seperate category.

Just to put something else into the mix...

where would I list a Longstitch kit.

Its not crossstitch, not technically embroidery as its worked on mono canvas specifically used for Longstitch, and its not tapestry or needlepoint as its worked using long stitches over the canvas.

I suppose we could go on adding lots of needleworks forever and have to draw the line somewhere, but i know that Longstitch is also a popular form of needlework.

Just a thought...if we are looking to revamp the needlework section are we limited to just a few subcats, broken down to further subcats.

why can't we have ( and not wanting to step on toes, just trying to be helpful )

    NEEDLEWORK>Cross stitch:>fabric
    NEEDLEWORK>Cross stitch:>Kits
    NEEDLEWORK>Cross stitch:>Other
    NEEDLEWORK>Cross stitch:>Patterns
    NEEDLEWORK>Cross stitch:>stamped cross stitch

    NEEDLEWORK>Embroidery>Fabric
    NEEDLEWORK>Embroidery>Kits
    NEEDLEWORK>Embroidery>Other
    NEEDLEWORK>Embroidery>Patterns (not books)
    NEEDLEWORK>Embroidery>stamped embroidery

    NEEDLEWORK>Tapestry/Needlepoint>Canvas
    NEEDLEWORK>Tapestry/Needlepoint>Kits
    NEEDLEWORK>Tapestry/Needlepoint>Other
    NEEDLEWORK>Tapestry/Needlepoint>Patterns

    NEEDLEWORK>Plastic Canvas>fabric
    NEEDLEWORK>Plastic Canvas>kits
    NEEDLEWORK>Plastic Canvas>charts
    NEEDLEWORK>Plastic Canvas>other

    NEEDLEWORK>Supplies>Hoops/Frames
    NEEDLEWORK>Supplies>Needles
    NEEDLEWORK>Supplies>Floss
    NEEDLEWORK>Supplies>Tapestry wool
    NEEDLEWORK>Supplies>Other

NEEDLEWORK>Other (thinking here of Hardanger, goldwork, blackwork, stumpwork etc...

    COMPLETED NEEDLEWORK>Cross stitch>further breakdown
    COMPLETED NEEDLEWORK>Crewel Embroidery>further breakdown
    COMPLETED NEEDLEWORK>Tapestry/Needlepoint>further breakdown
    COMPLETED NEEDLEWORK>Plastic Canvas>further breakdown

Seems fine to me, except for the longstitch. Still seems like needlepoint as it is canvas and wool isn't it? So I am not so sure about it, but then again, in US I don't think we see it much anymore.

With plastic canvas added as a category, it should have its own sub cat in completed items too.

I think it is coming together nicely!

Ok...will edit my list to add to the completed items

and will delete longstitch if you think it will be OK in Tapestry...

the main thing is to get the mess sorted out...
