Originally they were a metal mandrel on which rings could be worked to size
I think the plastic versions may retain the name mandrel but is usually just called a size gauge by non-jewelers

"Mandrel" Thanks! I couldn't for the life of me remember what it was called. Calling something a "thing-a-ma-jig" really doesn't help in communicating does it?
