    Question Food Processor Advice, Please

    Hello

I'm thinking about getting a food processor because we'll have a huge garden this summer, and I'm told we will be preserving even more than we did last year. The amount of chopping, slicing and dicing that took place in 2009 was almost enough to drive me to drink, so I'm looking for something that will make those tasks less onerous this year.

My first question then, as someone who used to have a food processor and only ever managed to vaporize food in it is.....have any of you had luck with such a machine? Were you able to chop, slice and dice foods into useable-sized pieces?

My second question then, can anyone recommend a machine they've enjoyed using? Or does someone have one to list that they don't use anymore?

Thanks for any and all clues

Have had two Cuisinarts in my life, beginning maybe 30 years ago. I got the newer one simply because it was a little bigger capacity.

I think Cuisinarts have high horsepower compared to other food processors, and every attachment is excellent quality. You can even make bread dough with the plastic, short-bladed piece, as well as mush (ranging from chop coarsely to puree to powder) everything with the metal blade, and produce various slicing shapes with the numerous discs available.

The only problem I ever caused by my incorrect usage was to try to pulverize a piece of dried turmeric root maybe 6" long. It wore a permanent yellow groove into the plastic bowl of the processor and didn't turn into turmeric powder at all. But then, how often will you feel the need to grind turmeric root?

I also have a Cuisinart and use it most of the time to slice and shred potatoes. Couldn't live without it.

    Thanks for the responses

I've got the Cuisinart Mini-Chop now and use it every day to blend moms food. That thing will make any combination of ingredients into the smoothest, glossiest butter icing you've ever seen! So I'm leaning toward another Cuisinart when I do make the move.

Mark has one of those Vita Mix machines, they are supposed to be all-but-bombproof, and he's managed to make blue flames shoot out the top. And hmm, the machine won't start now, he plans to hotwire it tomorrow. He decided to grind some Himalayan rock salt in it, wouldn't surprise me if tumeric root looms on the horizon.

If you think he's likely to make a habit of grinding up the tough stuff, get a coffee-grinder as well as a food processor!

He's got about 4 of those old metal hand-crank food processors, and admits he could grind the salt up with those. They aren't as macho or something, since they don't have an "on" switch and make a lot of noise
