Unhappy New Sub Category for Kitchen or Dining

    Hi:
I'm new to Ebid, but not new to online bidding. I'm would like to suggest a new sub category for Kitchen and or Dining room. I make Kitchen hanging towels with matching potholders and oven mitts. Right now there is really no catagory for kitchen towels. Something like:

    Kitchen/Linens/Towels,Potholders and Oven Mitts
    Kitchen/Linens/Towels
    Kitchen/Towels, Potholders and Oven Mitts.
    Dining Room/Table Linen/Napkin Holder

    Thank you, Irish

Yes, I find that there are many inexistent Categories. Maybe it's me not understanding how to set the stores & categories, but I am having a hard time.

For example, I open a store for Home & Garden which is a BROAD category. And my issue is that I have to choose a sub-category...let's say Kitchen. And doing so LIMITS my Home & Garden store to be for Kitchen items ONLY.
The Towels and Potholders can be a Parent Category in ones Home&GardenStore/KitchenCategory/TowelsPotholdersParentCategory.

But still, being that one can open up to 5 stores, 1 goes for Home&Garden Kitchen, another for Home&Garden Bedding, another for Home&Garden Decorative, another for Books, another for Collectibles, and what about all the other categories that fall in Home&Garden like Candles but that can not be a sub-category or Parent category within Kitchen or Bedding?
    I don't get it.
I will post this question seeking help.

Ok, back here again. The solution was to open a GENERAL STORE CATEGORY. For example: FOR THE HOME, then choose OTHER, and then YOU add YOUR OWN categories (up to 30 I believe) like for example
    Kitchen/Linens/Towels,Potholders and Oven Mitts
    Kitchen/Linens/Towels
    Kitchen/Towels, Potholders and Oven Mitts.
    Dining Room/Table Linen/Napkin Holder

    Hi Irish, welcome to ebid!

No there is no category for kitchen linens, when I have newer linens I list them under kitchen other, but most of mine are vintage so end up in the antiques category under linens.

Since there are not a lot of items yet, might I suggest that you request only the main sub category for the time being. Usually ebid is quicker to make a decision like that than to request 5 or 6 new sub cats. Something like this:

    Home & garden/kitchen/kitchen linens

When this category gets too big, then ask for a break down into the others.

Good luck on ebid. If you have any problems, just come to the forums, someone is always here to help you.

    Hi Flavors, welcome to ebid!!!

Yes with your stores the sky is the limit. Check out how other people do it.

Two schools of thought here, group in bunches or open a subcat for many many splits of the items you have.

I like the first one because it lets people window shop. If you put all your kitchen goodies in a store and open like 4 or 5 sub cats, that is easy for most people to shop around in. But when I go into someone's store and see 30 sub cats for foolish things, stuff divided so that each item has a category, I close it and look elsewhere, too much work.

Think of a store. At Kohl's the kitchen area has towels, pots, pans, salt and peppers, etc. Would you really want to go into the Salt and pepper dept? The dish cloth dept? No, too much trouble and you may miss something you really really have to have.

    Hope that helps,

Think about what you are going to sell in very broad categories. I have my five stores: vintage linens, vintage books, music, needlework and everything else. Sub cat are very broad too, vintage linen store has tableclothes, doilies, towels, etc.

Be sensible. If you are dividing up your group of 50 items, don't make 50 categories, people won't open a sub cat with one item in it, they will view those 50 items in a group anyway. If you intend to have 5000 items, make sure the division of sub cats or even cats is very clear: Under BOOKS have sub cats of Mysteries, horror, cookbooks, kid's books, etc. Resist the temptation to divide the books into 30 sub cats. Again, when I see that I look elsewhere, these old hands don't need to click click 30 times to view items.

Hard part is picking the clever names for the stores to tempt people to come in.

Hope that helps, others will offer more suggestions I am sure.

    I'm wondering if a general

    Home and Garden / Linens

category wouldn't suit? That would allow for tablecloths, etc. as well.

There is one there already under Home & Garden, dining room, table linens.

Home & Garden, kitchen, however does not include any kitchen linens, all the sub categories are hard items, like toasters, etc. (looks like linens are under Other which has thousands of items).

Home & Garden, drapes & curtains, has those items for whole house.

Looking at the logic of it, I think best fix is your idea, adding linens, but I think they have to be added to the sub cat of Kitchen. Then both sub categories would have a linen section
