Which is in breach of your rights, since your contract of sale is with Comet and not the manufacturer. It is up to Comet to settle with the customer and then to separately send the item back to the people they bought it from.

We are not arguing about it (we never tend to argue which some say is odd) Paul just asked me to pose the question

Sarah, I might have taken the bands back to the shop too. I might try to do it during another trip for another errand nearby. That is very bad customer service for them to refuse such a low value refund especially. Obviously the bands were old, with no way for a customer to know before opening the package. Now Paul is out travel expenses too, as well as delay in his mailings. Even if the shop would have given him a refund or replacement, the package of bands could have cost him something well over their marked price.

It's also a matter of how Paul values his time, as in how much per hour. Possibly this low priced item isn't worth the effort but sometimes you're just pushed too far.

Regional headquarters for the store might appreciate a snailmail outlining the situation. They might be appalled, or they might think the store employee did well.

What if you've used them a hundred times before, and never had a problem until this one time, for less than £2.00 and they're right on your doorstep? And sell things you use all the time? You'd still refuse to give them a second chance.

Like I've said, we don't know enough.

I think what opinion one offers is actually based on what assumptions one makes - so views are probably saying more about our basic assumptions than about this particular situation.

I would only refuse to give a store a second chance if they refused my refund (with recent receipt in hand etc). Even if it's only a small amount of money, it's my hard earned money they are keeping and I'm left with a broken item I can't use.

Then again, that's just my opionion assuming the shop has a history of doing this sort of trading

I was once told that a receipt does not mean anything regards proof of purchase and ownership, cannot recall what it was for though
