    Default Terrible Neighbours

Our neighbours are getting worse instead of better! We complained a while back to the council about the noise coming from their house, music is played loud from 8/8.30am until midday or so, it goes back on again 2-3 more times during the day. Its so loud we can hear the words of the songs clearly!

In the evenings when we watch tv, we can sometimes here the music over our own tv! We kept records and the council sent a letter, all was fine for a while but its back again and this time worse. Again we kept records but now the council seem to be doing nothing! They never return my calls, when I go to them I am told the person dealing with our case is not in the office.

This morning the woman had the music on in the house, it was loud so she could hear it while gardening. I went outside and very nicely asked her if she would mind turning the music down. She blanked me and 5 minutes later the music was turned up louder.

I have called the police who have said to go to our council! They are a retired couple, I thought they might of been hard of hearing, however I have caught them putting the music on and leaving the house several times now. I can now understand why this house sat idle for over a year!!

Can anyone else suggest what I can do? I have a young son and the music wakes him or cannot get him for his nap in the afternoon. Have been bugging the council, but feel im getting nowhere. This has been going on for ages.

Talk directly to your local councillor

    or

Speak to your MP........a letter of complaint from an MP tends to spur any Government department into swift action

One of mine used to wake up at the slightest noise and yet the other 3 would sleep through anything.

I agree that speaking to your MP is your best bet. Don't be put off if you can't reach him/her first time. Keep ringing or visit the surgery. Nag until he/she acts.
I play music loud...Rumours by Fleetwood Mac right now...but if someone complained, I'd turn it down. Or put headphones on.

Do a land registry search to find out if the house is owned by the occupants or if it is rented out and the occupants are the tenants. A land registry search will also tell you if the house is freehold or leasehold.

If the property is leasehold - the land registry search will tell you who the ground landlords are (who they pay ground rent to) - you can write to the ground landlord - they would be in breach of their lease by not allowing you the quiet right of enjoyment of your own home.

If the property is rented, the land registry search will give you the name of the owner / landlord. Write to him, as under any tenancy agreement, they again would be in breach of their tenancy for the same reason - not allowing you the quite right of enjoyment ......

If the councils environment health department won't do anything - they expect a diary with times and offence recorded - an the police authoritys hands are tied, then as someone else suggested - contact and pressure your MP.

If you complain to enough people and make enough noise about it then someone is bound to do something in the end. The other way is to play tit for tat and return the favour by playing the opposite of what they're playing - if they're playing rock then play Tchaikovskys 1812 at full volume. It may take a while, but even they may get the message that loud music is anti-social behaviour - especially if its between the set environmental hours of 11 pm to 7 am If its after 7 am and before 11 pm, it isn't classed as anti-social and its a bit of a grey area for any authority.

James cannot sleep if tv is on, he needs silence. He also wakes up with the slightest noise.

It was environmental health I was in touch with, when I ring they say the lady dealing with our case is on another call, when I call down to the office they say she is not in the office.

Going to our local MP sounds like a great idea. I dont mind music, we do play music ourselves but its rarely and its never loud. To me its a lack of respect, there has been times its still be playing at 1 in the morning. It gets tiring and frustrating when you have been putting up with it everyday for nearly a year, guaranteed 2-3 times a day (maybe more). It all got worse when we first called at the door and asked nicely.

We have never asked her to turn the music off, just turn it down. Seriously though, its really starting to get me down, I no longer feel I can enjoy my home anymore.

I understand your situation - we have students around here that sleep during the day and play music full volume when most are trying to sleep. And when they're not doing that, they're slamming taxi doors and screaming at top of their voices as they're coming home from the club at 3 and 4 am.

Other than the advise I've given you above, there isn't anything more I can add - without resorting the the most drastic solution which would be to move.
