    Pennies and nickels here in the U.S. have been worth less than their metal content for three years. Right now, the metal in a penny is worth around 1.12 cents.

    In 2006 they passed a law making it illegal to melt them down. Now they're talking about doing away with the penny altogether because the mint is losing money when they make them.
