Thread: Antique, Vintage or Collectable

  1. #1

    Default Antique, Vintage or Collectable

According to the U.S. Customs Service and most other sources I can find, an antique is an item that is at least 100 years of age.

So based on this I would think that vintage would be 21 to 99 years of age and collectible would be 1 day to 20 years of age.

Does this seem like it may be the industry standard? What are the eBid guidelines?

Agreed. But lines are a bit wavy, so many collectables are under the ebid Antiques umbrella because their categories are there (and not in the collectables category). For listing my older linens I always stick with using vintage, that seems safe enough, might add Victorian, Edwardian for the old stuff too.

I think on feebay the old stuff, whether glass, textiles, etc, could go either/or in antiques or collectables, the categories were similiar in both.

Not sure it matters much, some people are still convinced that stuff from the 1960s is Antique!!

    The battle rages on.

    1960s LOL only in automobiles!

I always try to ascertain an items age before I buy. It is important for me to know the approximate age of any piece that I plan to put in my home. My lasted find is a 1901 hutch made in S.F. It was behind a woodpile and I manage to get it for $400.00. Appraised at $3500.00. Looks great in my dining room

Vintage is usually associated with a period and not a specific chronological age. For example, 1960's vintage or vintage WWII era are appropriate.

Collectible or collectable is even more ambiguous since there are people that collect almost everything under the sun. I usually figure a collectible as something that some collects to display or keep without a utilitarian use.

On another auction site I remember reading that "vintage" referred to items that were at least 25 years old, and that guideline has influenced my titles wherever I list. When I use the word conversationally I am more likely to take a line through JaBeks suggestion, so I might describe something as "1990s vintage" despite the item being fresher than 25 years young

This is basically how I viewed antique, vintage, & collectibles. There are exceptions like cars. I'm pretty sure classifying is more involved but this basic imfo works for me.

No, not unless it is a 1910 Roadster. It is a vintage car if not 100 years old.

That, of course, is according to SOME measures of such things.

SO in 2067 you can claim it is an antique MGB Roadster!

There are a couple of categories with cars if i remember rightly.
Vintage which is 25 years or older and veteran.... But I have no idea how old that is.

I've just looked up the Veteran & Edwardian Car club.

cars built before 1904 come under the banner of Veteran. Cars built between 1904 - 1918.
