This visually stimulating film offers an intriguing journey for viewers interested in expanding their minds and exploring abstract concepts through animation.

While people mostly remember only Jan Hammer’s Beyond the Mind’s Eye soundtrack, this installment in the series, either the album or the film, isn’t far behind. The mad scientist of New Wave, Thomas Dolby, stretches his considerable talents into a wide range of styles— far beyond the “New Age” stylings of the previous two soundtracks. There’s more vocals than previously, too; a feature Kerry Livgren would make even more use of in the sequel, Odyssey Into the Mind’s Eye. Just note that if you are expecting the chilled-out tempos of the first two records, Gate is a bit edgier and more jarring at points, especially the opener, “Armageddon.” This is a different experience overall, but loaded with fun and whimsy and still plenty of relaxing moments, too. Worth a listen.
