Original 1842 4 7/8 inch x 7 3/4 inch engraving titled THE TEMPLE OF JUPITER OLYMPIAS, ATHENS.

This engraving depicts the impressive Corinthian columns of the temple of the Olympian Jupiter, completed by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in AD 132, with the Athenian acropolis seen in the distance. The small, modern city of low houses lies clustered at the foot of the cliff, dwarfed by the titanic ruins.

Drawn by Johann Jacob Wolfensberger (1797 - 1850). Born near Zürich, Wolfensberger studied there with Heinrich Füessli between 1814 and 1817, when he travelled to Italy. Settling in Naples, he worked there for several years, and also spent some time travelling in Sicily. A trip to London in 1840 resulted in a commission from the publisher Fisher for a series of seventeen prints of Italian and Greek views.
