Rail (Enthusiast) October 1993. Issue No.211

Main features:

- Two 'Warships' In Harness:  For the first time in over two decades, two 'Warship' diesels were paired. The occasion was the East Lancashire Railway's autumn gala, spread over three days - October 1-3. The Diesel Traction Group's No.D821 Greyhound was moved by road for the event, teaming up with resident No. D832 Onslaught. Remarkably, ELR volunteers fitted jumper cables, enabling multiple operation. The pair is seen at Burrs on October 1.  More coverage of this outstanding gala will appear in the next issue.

- News:  Three-way competition starts on Gatwick route; ScitRail switches off Class 26s; BRT announces the names for its four Class 20s; Chester-Hooton electrification goes live; S & C services to be cut; new look at London Bridge; cheaper meals on InterCity; and a new livery is planned for RAIL's Class 31.

- The Railway Jigsaw:  Gavin Morrison continues his Railway Jigsaw portfolio with a photographic journey along the South Western route between Basingstoke and Salisbury.

- Holbeck Depot Closes its Doors:  The West Yorkshire depot at Holbeck has always interested enthusiasts from steam through to diesel traction. Gavin Morrison reviews the history of the depot which finally closed its doors on October 2.

- Supporting the Railway in Devon:  Devon County Council is one of the leading counties in backing public transport to reduce urban congestion and pollution as part of a balanced transport strategy. Barrie Hughes has the story.
