• Comments: Astronomy Now is one of the UK’s most popular astronomy magazines, along with the Sky at Night magazine.  This came from a 2013 edition as it has a wall chart for 2013 on one side in landscape mode, and a colour poster of: “NGC 2264 and the Christmas Tree Cluster” (ESO image) on the other side. The wall chart would have been useful at the time as it tells you what is going on in the night sky for some selected days. If you are curious about  NGC 2264, this is the 2264’th entry in the New Galactic Catalogue of nebulae, clusters and galaxies. NGC 2264 consists of the Cone Nebula and the Christmas Tree Cluster – these both lie ~2700 light years away from Earth, so this image was taken using light that originally left this region of our Milky Way galaxy in approximately 680 BC or roughly about the time Babylon was assimilated by the Persian empire. The nebula is an emission nebular i.e. it gives off its own light as a result of the gasses present there being ionized by UV light. NGC2264 lies in the constellation of Monoceros the Unicorn!
