This book is a celebration of what are probably the best known and appreciated examples of historical architectural in the State of Illinois.  County Courthouses have been a part of the Illinois landscape since court sessions were first held in log cabins scattered across the vast, sparsely settled prairie.  Today, Illinois' 102 counties conduct the business of local government in a wide range of structures, both historical and modern.

These buildings tell the history of the state through their own distinctive designs and transformations over the years.  Long before Illinois became a state in 1818, beginning during the Revolutionary War, it was claimed and loosely governed by Virginia as "the County Of Illinois".  Following the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, county names stat still exist in Illinois today began to appear on maps of this region as it was part of the Northwest and Indiana Territories.  The reconstructed log courthouse in Cahokia harks back to these days of rough frontier government and justice.
